Het kan allemaal veel beter

Rosie O'Donnell is bekend als comediënne, actrice (Sleepless in Seattle, The Flinstones) en presentatrice van haar eigen talkshow. In het tv-programma 'The View' heeft zij onlangs opgeroepen om Bush af te zetten: 'We've given you [Bush] 4 years and 3,000 American lives, enough sir.'

'I think we should do it so the world knows that the nation is not standing behind this President, these choices. That the nation, a democracy, feels differently than the man who is leading as if it were a dictatorship. And that “we” represent this country...'

Deze oproep is niet nieuw. Elizabeth Holtzman, een voormalig lid van het Congres die destijds zitting had in 'the House Judiciary Committee' tijdens de impeachment-procedure tegen president Nixon in 1974, lanceerde dit idee al een jaar geleden. Zij verzucht in haar artikel 'The Impeachment of George W. Bush' dat de afzettingsprocedure tegen Nixon uiteindelijk te weinig opgeleverd heeft: 'I still found voting for his impeachment to be one of the most sobering and unpleasant tasks I ever had to undertake. None of the members of the committee took pleasure in voting for impeachment; after all, Democrat or Republican, Nixon was still our President. At the time, I hoped that our committee's work would send a strong signal to future Presidents that they had to obey the rule of law. I was wrong.'
